Academic institutions in the UK have been using OpenAthens since 1994 to enable staff, students and researchers to get easy access to internal and external online resources that the institutions have subscribed to – both on and off-site.
We’re pleased to say that in 2012 many institutions still chose us as their single sign-on provider, with over 50% of the UK higher education market using OpenAthens to access resources. We’ve seen a growing number of organisations choosing OpenAthens ahead of open source identity and access management solutions, with some organisations actively swapping their open source products in favour of an OpenAthens service.
However, this is only a part of the OpenAthens story. Our growth internationally has been significant, with leading health organisations throughout Australia and the USA, such as South Australia Health and the US Department of Veterans Affairs, using OpenAthens to provide remote access to critical medical information. Nearly 200 global publishers worldwide use OpenAthens technology to provide authentication to their protected resources.
Our customers choose OpenAthens because:
- There’s a fully hosted solution that means the librarian can set up and administer OpenAthens without needing to go to the IT department.
- The feature-rich administration interface has been designed specifically for librarians with frequent feedback from this community.
- The easy-to-use and customisable MyAthens portal provides onsite and remote access for end users.
OpenAthens is a fully-supported service with a dedicated development team that continues to work on improvements and new features in collaboration with the academic community.
